Exciting times are ahead for expatriates and tourists in Costa Rica! 🎉 We’re on the brink of seeing some fantastic changes to driving laws in this beautiful tropical paradise. 🌺 It’s all about making life easier and more enjoyable for the international community who’ve chosen to make Costa Rica their home or vacation spot.
In a game-changing move last September, Costa Rica extended the warmest of welcomes by allowing foreigners to immerse in the country’s breathtaking nature and vibrant culture for up to 180 days on a single tourist visa – a significant jump from the previous 90-day limit. 📅✈️
But, there was a catch – driving around this lush landscape wasn’t as straightforward due to some tricky rules. 🚦 The hassle of keeping up with legal driving requirements beyond the initial period had many scratching their heads, thanks to a mismatch between the Transito (Department of Transport) and the Department of Immigration’s policies. 🤔
The good news? That’s all set to change! 🌞 Proposals to tweak the Transito Law are sailing through, aiming to sync driving privileges with the new, longer visa duration. 🎉
The first hurdle’s been cleared with a thumbs-up on the first reading of the amendments, and we’re all eagerly awaiting the final vote expected early April 2024. 🗳️ These changes to Article 91 of Law No. 9078 are poised to let visitors drive blissfully throughout their 180-day adventure in Costa Rica. 🚗💨

And it gets better – the update will also cover those with pending immigration status or applications, including diplomats and international officials, granting them the green light to get behind the wheel with a Costa Rican license. 🌍🛂
Soon-to-be expats can also breathe a sigh of relief; you’ll be able to drive on until your residency comes through, and then, snag that Costa Rican driver’s license. 🎫👍
While there’s a cautious note about potential delays in law and amendment approvals, the vibe remains upbeat. Lawyers and immigration gurus are optimistic, and so are we! This change is a big win for Costa Rica’s expat and tourist scene. 🥳🌈
