Liberia Airport in Costa Rica (officially Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, code LIR) is the international gateway to Guanacaste. It sits about 23 kilometers from Playas del Coco, a 25 to 30 minute drive on paved roads. As of 2026, 14 airlines connect LIR to more than 30 cities, so most Coco travelers never need San Jose.

We live in Playas del Coco and we make the airport run constantly: picking up buyers, waving off rental guests, catching our own flights north. This guide covers what we tell every first-time visitor about flights, transfers, and the small things that make arrival day easier.

Why does Guanacaste have its own international airport?

Because the beaches are here and the capital is not. The modern terminal at LIR opened in January 2012, and the airport has been part of the VINCI Airports network since 2018. Growth since then has been steady: the airport handled about 1.9 million passengers in 2024, and in June 2025 it welcomed its 15 millionth passenger since the terminal opened.

For the northern Guanacaste coast (Playas del Coco, Ocotal, Playa Hermosa, and the Papagayo peninsula), this airport changed everything. Before direct flights into Liberia became common, every visitor faced a long drive from San Jose. Now you can leave a snowy runway in Toronto or Denver in the morning and be in the ocean by mid afternoon. It is a big part of why this stretch of coast grew into the market it is today.

Which airlines fly to Liberia Airport?

As of mid 2026, flight tracking site FlightsFrom lists 14 airlines serving around 32 nonstop destinations from LIR. The lineup includes:

One honest caveat: this list moves. Many routes run only during the December to April high season, and airlines add or drop cities every year. Before you lock in plans, check current schedules on the official Guanacaste Airport site or directly with the airline. If you are traveling in the green season, expect fewer nonstop options and more connections through Miami, Houston, or Dallas.

How do you get from Liberia Airport to Playas del Coco?

The drive is short and simple: roughly 23 kilometers (14 miles) via Route 21 and Route 151, both fully paved, taking 25 to 30 minutes. Your real decision is who drives. Here are the four options, with the tradeoffs as we see them:

Private shuttle

The easiest option, especially after a long travel day. A driver meets you at arrivals with a sign, helps with bags, and takes you door to door. Recent published rates run around 90 US dollars for a small group, though prices vary by company and season. If you are staying in one of our rentals, ask us: we can recommend drivers we use ourselves.

Rental car

Most rental agencies operate from lots a few minutes from the terminal and run free shuttles from arrivals. If you plan to explore beaches and towns beyond Coco, a car is worth it. If you plan to stay mostly in town, you may not need one at all, since central Coco is walkable. Our guide to driving in Costa Rica covers what to expect on the roads.

Taxi

Official airport taxis wait outside arrivals. Expect to pay in the same range as a private shuttle for the Coco run. Agree on the price or confirm the meter before you load your bags, especially in peak weeks.

Public bus

The cheapest option by far (the local fare is under a couple of dollars), but the bus stop is a hot walk from the terminal on the main road, and buses are not built for luggage. We only suggest it for light packers on a tight budget. For most arrivals, the shuttle wins.

Should you fly into Liberia or San Jose?

For Playas del Coco and the surrounding beaches, fly into Liberia. It is not close. From San Jose's SJO airport, the drive to northern Guanacaste runs four and a half to five hours with normal stops and traffic, and driving after dark on unfamiliar roads is something we advise visitors to avoid. From LIR you are at the beach before your luggage wrinkles settle.

SJO only makes sense in two cases. First, when the fare difference is large enough to justify five extra hours each way. Second, when your trip genuinely covers both ends of the country, for example a week split between the central valley or the southern Pacific and Guanacaste. If your trip is about Coco, Ocotal, Hermosa, or Papagayo, the choice is easy.

What is the airport itself like?

Small, modern, and fast, which is exactly what you want. LIR has a single terminal of about 23,000 square meters with restaurants, duty free shopping, car rental counters, ATMs, currency exchange, free Wi-Fi, and a VIP lounge. You can walk from the curb to your gate in minutes. Compared with the mega hubs most visitors connect through, it feels refreshingly calm.

That said, it is a seasonal airport, and it behaves like one. On peak Saturdays in high season, several wide body flights can land close together and immigration lines stretch. Build patience into your first hour, and if you are departing in high season, take your airline's recommended arrival time seriously rather than treating it as a suggestion.

The airport is a real part of the buying math

One last point we make to buyers: proximity to LIR is not just convenience, it is value. Homes within 30 to 40 minutes of an international airport are easier to rent, easier to visit on short trips, and easier to sell later. Playas del Coco sits squarely inside that radius, which is one reason the town keeps attracting both vacationers and full-time residents. If you are weighing a move, our post on what to know before moving to Costa Rica is a good next read.
